Jack Clemo Poetry Competition 2011 Winners
Sheila Grundy was awarded third prize for her poem Final Flight.
Final Flight
No suitcase? Surely a small holdall
with my best jacket, smart shoes?
No footwear? What of my family photo
in the silver frame? My certificates?
How do I prove my worth? Passport,
bank statement, title deeds?
No sharp objects. nothing flammable,
no textiles, nothing practical,
no paper, card or plastic, no money,
no jewels, not even a wedding ring,
no liquids or solids,
no laptop, phone or sweets, just follow the light.
Leave memories behind
but take humility, take firm belief.
With empty hands to nurture prayer,
seek the pearly glow at take-off.
Zero baggage allowed.
